Hockey playoffs, DNHL 2008-2009

March 16th, 2009

With a perfect unbeaten season 16-0 we came into the playoffs.  In the playoffs you have to win your game otherwise you do not advance to the next round.  We played two playoff games in Breckenridge last weekend March 7-8th.  One thing you have to be aware of is the altitude 9,600 feet above sea level.  Drink lots of water and cut down on activities.  We had one game on Saturday against he last seeded team 12-0.  Then another on Sunday against the Summit ( Breckenridge home team ).  Our team was a little flat after spending the night at altitude, activities included the swimming pool and “Hotel tag”.  We came away with the win 3-1.

Then on March 15 we had the final game against the NoCo Fort Collins team,  it was played at the Promenade Green ice rink.  The Promenade is a really nice facility with 3 rinks.  Somehow we were a little tense and couldn’t get our game going for a while.  The game was tight, we had some unlucky bounces and we scored a goal that was disallowed because the ref did not have the right angle.  I had a shot on the post after beating the goalie but it just didn’t want to go in.  In all a good effort, the Fort Collins team seemed a little hungrier than our team and came away with the win 1-3.

I know there is a life lesson in there and I’m still processing the whole thing.  We got 2nd place which is pretty good considering 16 guys showed up to play at the beginning of the season, no tryouts.  We just had enough to field a team and a great team it became.

Great Grandma

March 6th, 2009

My Grandfather ( Afi ) was back in the homeland recently.  He sent me a picture of my Great Grandmother which I have not seen in a while and himself.  I long to go back to Iceland for another visit, I’m hoping it could happen this year.

End of regular season

March 3rd, 2009

It’s the end of the regular season, my Boulder DNHL Hockey team went unbeaten.  It’s been a lot of work, but it’s been worth it.  Our last game was the closest yet of score 6-4.  Next weekend the playoffs start, which means we really have to be on our game.  Win 3 games to get the title however if we loose one game we are out of the running.

Btw, I’m the second one lower right, the only one with the face mask still on.

Vince visit, Feb 2009

February 22nd, 2009

Vince and his father Ralph came for a visit last weekend from Washington DC.  It was great to see him, we hit the slopes and we snowboarded for the whole weekend.  We were really lucky that the weather held up, sunny and no wind on Saturday.  On Sunday we got a little bit of a fresh powder snow on top.  Great weekend, then we drove them to the airport on Monday.  Hopefully Vince and his father can stay longer next time, I’m looking forward to 2010 !

A visitor

January 17th, 2009

We woke up this morning with a visitor.  An owl came and sat in our tree right outside the window.  The owl just sat in the sun watched the squirrels and tried to get a nap in between.  The owl stayed there for the whole day until dusk.  I hope to see this one again some day.
